Don and Orit have three children (Talya, Elan, and Itai). Orit has a PhD in Civil Engineering and a Masters’ in Negotiation, Conflict Resolution, and Peacebuilding. In her professional life, Orit is a Senior Facilitator with Sac State Consensus and Collaboration Programs where she works with state agencies on a diverse set of state policies ranging from natural resources to behavioral health. The Kalmans have been active members of Congregation Bet Haverim where their children attended religious school. He has lived in the East Bay since 1975 and also lives in Davis with his wife Janet since 2016. Janet and Roy are engaged in synagogue life at Congregation Bet Haverim (CBH) in Davis and at Temple Isaiah in Lafayette. Roy is a strong supporter of Israel and enjoys studying Torah, Talmud and Mussar. He chairs Team Tikkun Olam at CBH and is committed to develop the next generation of young Jewish leaders and thus is honored to serve on the Hillel Board. Frankel (UCD ’04) is a partner in the San Francisco office of international law firm McGuireWoods LLP. He chairs the firm’s state attorneys general practice group, handling a mix of litigation and regulatory work. Before joining the firm, Kevin was a prosecutor in the Public Integrity Bureau of the New York State Office of the Attorney General and in the Major Economic Crimes Bureau of the New York County District Attorney’s Office. Before that he was in private practice in New York and San Francisco. Kevin also serves on the adjunct faculty at Columbia Law School. Kevin has been serving on nonprofit boards for over two decades, including as the student representative to the Hillel at Davis and Sacramento board while president of Hillel and the Jewish Student Union as an undergraduate. More recently, Kevin has served on the boards of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training, Board Match, the Rafiki Coalition for Health and Wellness, the Health and Environmental Resource Center, and the Columbia Law School Alumni Association. Kevin remains passionate about public service and nonprofit governance. Before graduating with honors from Columbia Law School—where he was a member of the student senate, served on the board of the Jewish Law Students Association, and lived in the Bet Ephraim Food Coop—Kevin graduated from U.C. In his business career, Tom served nearly 20 years with Holiday Inn Club Vacations Incorporated as Chief Financial Officer and then Chief Executive Officer. During this tenure, the company experienced significant business and financial growth, establishing the Holiday Inn Club Vacations® brand as a leader in the industry. Earlier in his career, Tom was a Consulting Partner at Arthur Andersen, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at Edify Corporation, and Chairman and CEO of the venture subsidiary of the Stanford Research Institute. Tom and his wife, Linda —an advocate for Israel and a prominent voice against antisemitism— are actively involved in initiatives at UC Davis where their son, Zachary David, studied from 2013 to 2017. Zachary was deeply engaged in the Jewish community on campus, serving as President of Aggies for Israel and standing as a passionate advocate for Israel and the Jewish people. Her family belonged to Temple Emanuel where Pia was active in youth activities. Pia spent many wonderful summers at Wilshire Boulevard Temple Gindling Hilltop camp where her already strong love of Judaism blossomed. In 1985, she completed a B.A. at UC Santa Cruz and went on to receive an M.A. in Art History from Emory University in 1988. Pia then returned to Los Angeles where she worked as an Arts Education Assistant at the Skirball Museum. Pia has spent the last decade in non-profit administration as the Operations Manager and then Executive Director at Bread of Life Center: a community non-profit that trains Spiritual Directors. From June 2020 to June 2023, Pia served as Executive Director of Congregation Bet Haverim in Davis where she shepherded the synagogue through the pandemic as well as changes in staff and leadership positions. In retirement, Pia has studied at Pardes Institute for Jewish Studies in Jerusalem. Pia’s eldest daughter made Aliyah in 2016, served as a Commander in the IDF Caracal Unit, and then as a Knesset guard for the last three years. Arielle returned to Sacramento in February 2024. Pia currently lives in Sacramento with her husband Jay. They enjoy traveling, exploring the outdoors, spending time with the four daughters, two granddaughters they have between them, and participating in Jewish life in Sacramento. Pia’s passion for Jewish learning and support of Jewish education is where she has chosen to focus a significant amount of her time. Two other Klein children live in the Washington, DC, area where the family resided until their move to Davis in 1992. Gail was an elementary school teacher in Bethesda, Maryland, and Barry worked at a federal laboratory doing research in condensed matter (solid-state) physics and administering a large research group. Barry and Gail have their roots in the New York City area and still crave the real bagels and pastrami that are getting harder to find, and the overall NYC lifestyle that still permeates them and their children. But you can’t beat California, especially in the second half of your life. Barry joined the physics faculty at UC Davis as Department of Physics Chair in 1992 and continued into the UC Davis administration as Vice Provost for Academic Personnel and Vice Chancellor for Research until his retirement in 2016. Barry enjoys time with family, travelling, a bit of golf, bike riding, and music and art attendance, and still some physics research. Barry has kept active with volunteer activities that include Hillel (Board Member), Congregation Bet Haverim (Board Member and co-President), the UC Davis Emeriti Association (President), the UC Davis Library Leadership Board, Sierra Nevada University (Board of Trustees), the Panel on Public Affairs of the American Physical Society, the Board of the American Friends of the US-Israel Bi-National Science Foundation, and the Friends of the Mondavi Center at UC Davis. Sometimes it feels that retirement is an illusion, but a very enjoyable one. On Shabbat, I would exclusively be found at UC Davis Hillel. Currently, I am the Leadership Development Political Education Manager at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). In this role, I develop educational opportunities and train students from across the country to engage in the electoral and legislative process. Beyond academics, Reem is actively involved in the campus community and is eager to serve on the Hillel Board of Directors and give back to a community that has provided a supportive home away from home. He is an active member of AEPi, Aggies for Israel, and Mishelanu where he builds connections with fellow students and advocates for Jewish life and Israel engagement on campus. Reem brings a thoughtful, solutions-oriented perspective to conversations and is excited to help shape meaningful programming for his peers. Alex is originally from Los Angeles and has spent his entire life growing up in California (mostly SoCal), so Davis and NorCal are a new adventure for him! Aside from studying for the MCAT, Alex can be seen hiking, biking, or anywhere else in nature (possibly walking his dog June). Alex joined Hillel his very first year after meeting one of the previous interns at a social event as well as a Coffee “Date” with the former Program Director, Seth Browner. Hillel at Davis and Sacramento is unique, according to Alex, in the sense that there is a strong sense of community, and you can sense that almost immediately when you walk through our wooden doors and sit down for a warm meal! She graduated in 1976 with a BA in English where she met her husband of almost 48 years through Hillel. They attended their first Seder together there 50 years ago. In addition to raising two children (Ben, age 41 and Sarah, age 38), Nanci has held various jobs. She worked as a court reporter, an instructional media technician at an elementary school library, and most recently as an ophthalmic technician. Nanci and her husband Chuck lived and worked in Thousand Oaks, California until they retired in 2016 and moved to San Francisco to return to their Northern California roots and live near their kids and grandchildren. Nanci’s extensive volunteer history with Jewish non-profits demonstrates how ready she is to get involved in Hillel! She was on the board of Temple Etz Chaim, a 500-family congregation, in Thousand Oaks for a total of 18 years and served as Temple President 2008-2012. She was previously involved in Hadassah and served in various positions on the board, eventually becoming President of the Shalom Chapter in the Conejo Valley. In addition, Nanci tutored at the Conejo Valley Adult School literacy program for several years. He is double minoring in accounting and technology management. He had a summer internship in 2024 for Douglas Parking in Oakland as a business development associate. His main responsibilities included sales outreach by developing a pipeline of prospects using multiple research, referral, and sales strategies. In his free time, Evan plays rec sports at UC Davis and served for two years as an intern with Hillel. He plans to attend graduate school to pursue his MBA or JD to pursue his dream of sports management for an American professional sports organization. Her research focuses on the impacts of stress on children and families and currently has a research project examining the impact of antisemitism on Jewish families. As antisemitism has exploded at UC Davis, she has been involved in multiple efforts to increase civil discourse and call out hate speech. Leah is a Davis resident with two children in the Davis school district. She has also worked with the school district attempting to educate on and combat antisemitism between students and also in the curriculum. Leah and her family are also active members of Congregation Bet Haverim where she serves on the Countering Antisemitism Committee. Since 1991, our family has lived in Davis, and I practiced Periodontics and Dental Implantology in Davis from 1991 until retirement in 2017. Our family have belonged to Congregation Bet Haverim since 1992. My wife Ann and I were married in 1983, and we have two daughters who had Bat Mitzvahs at Bet Haverim. Hanna is an attorney for Morris and Foerester Law Firm in downtown LA, and Eliana is in medical school at UCLA. Bet Haverim has been an integral part of our lives since we moved here over 30 years ago and a blessing to our family. While I was in college at Florida State University, there was no formal Hillel active on our campus. Seeing what Hillel has done for so many Jewish students at UCD, helping with the campaign to help build the present Hillel House on A Street, and seeing the need to support Jewish students on college campuses in these tumultuous times motivates me contribute my time and energy to serve on the Hillel Board. In 1989, she opened a modeling school and agency. Once Jodi settled in California with her husband, she worked as a recruiter for high tech and admin roles, and volunteered for organizations she is passionate about. Jodi was a founding member of Hadassah’s local young women’s chapter, “Atidainu,” an AIPAC regional board member and chairwoman for its membership events, and a fundraising chair for Shalom School’s first formal gala. Once Jodi’s family moved to Davis, she joined Congregation Bet Haverim (CBH) and became one of the 5 founders of Gan Haverim Preschool at CBH, and later served on the CBH board and led their fundraising efforts for over 12 years. In 2006, when both of Jodi’s boys were enrolled in Davis public schools, she served on PTAs producing fundraising events. In 2010, Jodi developed and launched the Davis Parent University, a free lecture series that brought in nationally renowned authors to present talks on how to bring up healthy, well balanced kids. Jodi’s most recent work was as a Donor Relations Specialist with the Yolo Food Bank and since 2020, a volunteer with Hillel on its fundraising committee. Jodi lives in Davis with her husband, Eric, a physician and healthcare informatics expert, and has two beautiful young adult sons, Ethan and Eliot, who share her passion for Judaism. After graduating Hillsdale High School (San Mateo) in 1984, I immediately began my freshman year at UC Davis. I soon became a member of the UC Davis Hillel House. The 1980s A Street bungalow became my social center. The Hillel student board appointed me as the Israel Action Chairman enabling me to serve as UC Davis’ liaison to AIPAC, and in 1985, I represented UC Davis Hillel at the National Hillel Conference in D.C. After graduating U.C. Davis in 1988, I married Valli Israels in 1994. Valli was a Cal graduate, and we both attended and received our law degrees from McGeorge School of Law. Valli and I have raised two children, Ariel Mendlin (UC Davis 2020 graduate) and Haley Mendlin (U.C. Berkeley). I am a managing partner and trial lawyer with Curtis Legal Group ( a Sacramento and Modesto personal injury firm), and Valli served as a Superior Court Judge. I also am involved in a program, originally built for students studying insect biology but now being expanded to the full Davis campus, that gets undergraduates involved in doing research. Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science at California State University, Sacramento, Ilai served as the founding president of the university's Jewish Student Union, fostering community and cultural engagement on campus. He also served as Hillel’s first Sacramento State Engagement Intern for two years. Ilai is committed to service and advocacy. He embarked on a cross-country cycling journey from San Francisco to Washington, D.C. as part of The Ability Experience's "Journey of Hope," promoting awareness and support for individuals with disabilities. He has over 35 years of experience in medicine and public health research, teaching, and public service. Dr. Schenker is the founding director of the Davis Center for Occupational and Environmental Health, the Western Center for Agricultural Health and Safety, and the Migration and Health Research Center. His specialty is occupational and environmental disease with a focus on respiratory and reproductive health. Dr. Schenker also conducts epidemiology research and public policy advocacy on the health of global migrant populations with a particular focus on farmworkers and occupational disease. I received my medical degree from McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University and have been in practice for more than 20 years. Outside of my medical practice, I have been active with the Jewish community in Davis and our branch of Hillel. During the campaign to build our current, spacious building, I went to the Davis City Council to protest the repetitive blocking of the construction plans that required redrafting of the blueprints. I joined in the delight of the other supporters of Hillel that the final plan took life with such an impressive final result. I should have taken it as an omen that when I was in Jerusalem in 2017, while entering the souk, I found a bus with the UC Davis Hillel sign on the side and encountered some of our students who were on the tour. I am delighted that Hillel exists on our campuses to provide daily support to the Jewish students of UC Davis and Sacramento State. I so enjoyed hearing the talks of the outstanding students and alumni speakers at the recent gala fundraising event. I am dismayed that it is necessary to support our promising students during these times of increasing antisemitism on the campus, in the city of Davis, and of course across the globe. Having grown up without a sizable local Jewish community, arriving here was my first real chance to connect with Jewish life. Like many others, I first wandered into Hillel for the free food, but I quickly fell in love with the people and programming, and I’ve been involved ever since. Hillel is where I made some of my closest friends and built countless memories. It was there that I met the then-president of Alpha Epsilon Pi (AEPi), which inspired me to join the fraternity. Over my undergraduate career, I served on the AEPi executive board and the board of Aggies for Israel, and I spent my senior year as president of AgPAC. I also became active in student government after meeting ASUCD senators in my Introduction to Hebrew class. The warmth and support of Davis’s Jewish community encouraged me to stay at UC Davis for graduate school. As a PhD candidate, I’ve continued to give back—especially after the October 7 attacks— and I currently serve on the Advisory Council for Jewish Student Life. I have also served on Hillel’s student board and as an elected representative to the Graduate Student Assembly (GSA). He stayed in Orange County and worked in the environmental testing industry for many years. At Del Mar Analytical, he was the fifth employee and started as a laboratory technician. When the company was sold, there were 200 employees, and he was the President of the company. The acquiring company, TestAmerica, kept Mark on as Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Western Division where he oversaw 11 facilities and nearly 400 employees. Mark also started and sold an Internet Domain Registrar in the early days of the Internet. After a short time with a waste to energy company, Mark accepted the role of CEO at a family owned manufacturing company where he is tasked with overall strategy, operations, and growth initiatives for the company. Mark is a firm believer in continuous learning. As such, he has been a member of Vistage Worldwide for 26 years. There, he participates in monthly meetings where subject matter experts and diverse resource speakers help push executive members to continuously grow and improve. Mark and his wife, Sharon, live in Irvine. Sharon is an Assistant Vice President at Pacific Life. Their son, Adam, is completing his computational biology PhD from Weill Cornell – Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NYC. Davis Foundation Board, and currently serves as the Finance Chair on the Cal Aggie Alumni Board. My interest in joining the Hillel Board stems from the pride I have in my Jewish religion and culture. I would like to do what I can to help support our Jewish undergrads where they can feel safe and comfortable as Jews during these volatile times as well as help prepare them for life after college. Before retiring in 2022, Jay’s career spanned more than 30 years as a Sales Executive within finance and the mortgage banking industry working for a few of the largest banks in the country. Jay has been married to his college sweetheart (Barbara) who is also a U.C Davis graduate (B.S. Botany, 1986) for 35 years now. They have two grown children: a son who is a Physical Therapist whose practice is based in San Francisco and a daughter who is a Teacher of Special Education up in Seattle, Washington. As an undergraduate, I served as President of Aggies For Israel, Vice President of the Jewish sorority SAEPi, an Emerson Fellow for StandWithUs, a fellow for the Zionist Organization of America (ZOA), and a founding member of the Chancellor’s Advisory Council on Jewish Life. My favorite Hillel memories are cooking in the kitchen for the annual Persian Shabbat! Upon graduating, I worked for the LA-based nonprofit the David Labkovski Project, developing Holocaust education programs for schools and local institutions. I have since returned to pursue my J.D. at UC Davis School of Law where I serve as the External Relations chair of the Jewish Law Students Association (JLSA). She spent her childhood moving back-and-forth from the suburbs of LA to the suburbs of Tel Aviv. She finally settled in Los Angeles where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from UCLA. There, she was an active member of Bruins of Israel. After graduating, she spent time volunteering and traveling throughout Latin America. She returned to the United States in 2008 when she worked on a (winning) U.S. Senate race in Alaska, serving as the statewide fundraising coordinator. Shiran went on to work as a teacher in Alaska's public school system before starting law school at Duke University in 2009. After graduating, Shiran was a litigation associate with Kirkland and Ellis in Los Angeles where she focused on complex civil defense. She then moved on to become a deputy attorney general with the California Department of Justice, defending the state against civil rights lawsuits. Shiran now uses her legal skills as a senior counsel on the California Assembly's Judiciary Committee, helping shape legislation. She lives in Sacramento with her husband Ari, their three young kids, and new puppy. Shiran is an involved member of the Jewish and Israeli community of Sacramento and tries to volunteer whenever she can.
